Safari Birding Itinerary
Day 1 – Nairobi to Amboseli National Park
Depart Nairobi after breakfast and drive south toward Amboseli National Park, set dramatically against the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Arrive in time for lunch followed by an introductory afternoon birding drive. The open plains and seasonal wetlands make Amboseli one of Kenya’s most rewarding bird habitats. Target species include Secretary Bird, Kori Bustard, Crowned Lapwing, Yellow-necked Spurfowl, and various weavers. Raptors such as Bateleur and Tawny Eagle are commonly seen scanning the plains.

Day 2 – Full Day Birding in Amboseli
Day 2 – Full Day Birding in Amboseli
Spend a full day exploring Amboseli’s diverse habitats including swamps, grasslands, and acacia woodlands.
The permanent marshes attract herons, egrets, African Jacana, Black Crake, and numerous waterfowl. Open plains support larks, pipits, and bustards, while woodland edges reveal hornbills, woodpeckers, and sunbirds.
In addition to birds, Amboseli offers outstanding wildlife sightings including large elephant herds, adding to the safari experience. Early morning and late afternoon sessions maximize activity and photographic opportunities.
Day 3 – Lake Naivasha & Crescent Island
After breakfast, travel through the Great Rift Valley to Lake Naivasha. This freshwater lake supports a rich diversity of aquatic and shoreline birds.
Enjoy a boat excursion where you may observe African Fish Eagle, Pied Kingfisher, Goliath Heron, Great White Pelican, and cormorants. The calm waters provide excellent close-range viewing.
Later visit Crescent Island for a guided walking safari. With no large predators present, this allows relaxed bird observation among grazing wildlife. Species here include spur-winged geese, ibis, weavers, and numerous passerines.
Day 4 – Lake Nakuru National Park
Proceed to Lake Nakuru National Park, internationally recognized for its flamingo populations (numbers vary seasonally).
The alkaline lake attracts both Greater and Lesser Flamingos, along with pelicans, avocets, stilts, and other waders. The surrounding acacia forests host species such as African Hoopoe, Grey-headed Kingfisher, and various barbets.
Lake Nakuru is also an important rhino sanctuary, so wildlife viewing complements the birding experience.
Day 5 – Transfer to Maasai Mara
After breakfast, drive to the Maasai Mara National Reserve, one of Africa’s most celebrated wildlife destinations.
Arrive in time for lunch followed by an afternoon birding game drive. The open grasslands are prime habitat for Secretary Birds, Kori Bustards, Rufous-naped Larks, and a variety of raptors including Martial Eagle and vultures. Riverine forests along the Mara River add kingfishers, bee-eaters, and storks to the checklist.
Day 6 – Full Day Maasai Mara Birding
Spend the day exploring different sections of the Mara ecosystem. Early morning drives focus on grassland specialists and raptors taking advantage of rising thermals.
The Mara River corridor provides excellent opportunities for observing waterbirds and woodland species. Seasonal migrants may significantly increase species diversity.
In addition to birdlife, the reserve’s abundant mammals — including lions, elephants, giraffes, and cheetahs — enrich the overall safari experience.
Day 7 – Return to Nairobi
After a final early morning birding session, return to Nairobi by road.
Depending on timing, brief stops along the escarpment may provide additional species. Transfer to your hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for departure.
