This specialized 8-day birding safari explores Kenya’s most diverse western habitats — from the equatorial rainforest of Kakamega Forest to the rich papyrus wetlands of Lake Victoria, the open savannahs of the Maasai Mara National Reserve, and the alkaline shores of Lake Nakuru National Park.

Western Kenya hosts some of the country’s rarest and most localized species, many of them found nowhere else in Kenya. Combined with classic savannah birding in the Mara and Rift Valley lakes, this itinerary offers an exceptional species list within just eight days.

Led by an experienced birding specialist guide, this safari is ideal for serious birders seeking forest specials, wetland rarities, grassland species, and raptors — all in one well-paced journey.

SafariBirding Itinerary

Day 1 – Nairobi to Kakamega Forest

Depart Nairobi early and travel west toward Kakamega Forest, Kenya’s only true equatorial rainforest and an eastern extension of the Congo Basin forests.

Upon arrival, enjoy an introductory afternoon forest walk. The dense canopy and rich understory host species rarely found elsewhere in Kenya. Early targets may include Great Blue Turaco, Black-and-white Casqued Hornbill, Blue-headed Bee-eater, and various forest flycatchers. The humid forest atmosphere provides an entirely different birding experience compared to Kenya’s savannahs.

Overnight near Kakamega Forest.

Spend a full day exploring different sections of Kakamega Forest including riverine trails, forest clearings, and canopy zones.

This is prime territory for regional specialties such as Turner’s Eremomela, Grey Parrot, Jameson’s Wattle-eye, Yellow-billed Barbet, and White-spotted Flufftail (heard more often than seen). Mixed feeding flocks move actively through the mid-canopy, offering exciting identification opportunities.

The forest’s biodiversity makes this one of Kenya’s most rewarding birding destinations for serious listers.

After a morning birding session, travel to Kisumu on the shores of Lake Victoria. En route, watch for roadside species and agricultural-edge birds.

In the afternoon, begin exploring the papyrus swamps and wetlands along Lake Victoria. These habitats host specialized species such as Papyrus Gonolek, Carruthers’s Cisticola, White-winged Swamp Warbler, and African Jacana. The lake also supports herons, kingfishers, and cormorants.

Overnight in Kisumu.

Spend the day exploring additional wetland sites and lakeshore trails around Kisumu.

Lake Victoria’s shallow bays attract large numbers of waterbirds including African Fish Eagle, Pied Kingfisher, Goliath Heron, and various terns and gulls. Seasonal migrants may significantly increase species diversity.

The combination of open water, papyrus marsh, and surrounding grasslands makes this area highly productive for both resident and migratory birds.

After breakfast, drive to the Maasai Mara National Reserve, one of Africa’s most celebrated wildlife destinations.

Arrive in time for lunch followed by an afternoon birding game drive. The open grasslands are prime habitat for Secretary Birds, Kori Bustards, Rufous-naped Larks, and a variety of raptors including Martial Eagle and vultures. Riverine forests along the Mara River add kingfishers, bee-eaters, and storks to the checklist.

 Spend a full day birding the Mara ecosystem. The Mara River and its surrounding woodlands attract kingfishers, bee-eaters, storks, and weavers, while grasslands host larks, pipits, and bustards.

Raptors are particularly impressive here — Martial Eagle, Tawny Eagle, and various vultures are regularly observed. In addition to birds, the Mara offers abundant wildlife including lions, elephants, and cheetahs, enhancing the overall safari experience.

Depart for Lake Nakuru National Park in the Great Rift Valley.

Lake Nakuru is internationally recognized for its flamingo populations, though numbers vary seasonally. The alkaline lake attracts Greater and Lesser Flamingos, pelicans, avocets, and other waterbirds. The surrounding acacia woodlands provide habitat for African Hoopoe, Grey-headed Kingfisher, and various woodpeckers.

The park is also a stronghold for both black and white rhinos, adding to the day’s highlights.

After a final morning birding session around Lake Nakuru, return to Nairobi. Depending on timing, additional roadside birding stops can be made.

Transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for departure, concluding an exceptional western Kenya birding journey.
