Safari Birding Itinerary

Day 1 – Nairobi National Park Birding

Your birding adventure begins early in Nairobi National Park, a remarkable protected savannah just outside the capital. With the city skyline in the background, this park offers exceptional grassland and wetland birding opportunities.

Target species include the iconic Secretary Bird striding elegantly through the plains, Common Ostrich, Crowned Lapwing, Kori Bustard, Northern Pied Babbler, and a variety of raptors such as Augur Buzzard and Bateleur. Seasonal wetlands may host herons, egrets, and migratory waders.

Beyond birds, you may encounter rhino, giraffe, and antelope, adding to the richness of the experience. Afternoon at leisure or optional visit to local wetlands for additional species.

Begin the morning in Karura Forest, a lush urban forest reserve offering a completely different habitat from the previous day. Here, dense woodland trails provide excellent chances of spotting Hartlaub’s Turaco, African Paradise Flycatcher, White-headed Wood Hoopoe, Variable Sunbird, and forest barbets.

Later proceed to the forested slopes of Ngong Hills, where upland grassland and forest-edge species await. Look for Jackson’s Francolin, Mountain Yellow Warbler, Hunter’s Cisticola, and a variety of highland sunbirds. Raptors riding thermals over the hills provide dramatic viewing opportunities.

The diversity of habitats today significantly increases your species list.

Depart early toward the cooler highlands near Aberdare National Park. The montane forests and bamboo zones here host a rich variety of endemic and near-endemic species.

Guided bird walks along forest trails may reveal the striking Hartlaub’s Turaco in flight, Abyssinian Crimsonwing, White-starred Robin, Mountain Buzzard, and highland forest sunbirds. The dense vegetation and misty atmosphere create an immersive birding environment, ideal for photography and quiet observation.

The Aberdare foothills are particularly rewarding for forest specialists rarely seen in lower elevations.

Today focuses on the biodiverse montane forests around Mount Kenya. The varied altitude zones support an impressive range of species.

Target birds include the elusive African Green Ibis, Silvery-cheeked Hornbill, Crowned Hornbill, African Emerald Cuckoo, and Scarlet-tufted Malachite Sunbird at higher elevations. Mixed feeding flocks move actively through the canopy, offering exciting birding sessions.

The cool mountain air, towering indigenous trees, and scenic forest trails make this one of Kenya’s most rewarding highland birding locations.

After a relaxed morning bird walk or optional final session around your lodge gardens, return to Nairobi. Depending on flight schedules, you may explore additional wetlands or forest patches en route to add final species to your checklist.

Transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for departure, concluding your immersive Kenya Highlands birding experience.
