This adventurous cross-route on Mount Kenya combines the direct Naro Moru ascent with the breathtaking scenery of the Chogoria descent. It is ideal for trekkers seeking a challenging summit experience and dramatic alpine landscapes.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Nairobi – Naro Moru Park Gate – Met Station (3,000m)
Depart Nairobi in the morning and drive approximately 3.5 hours to Naro Moru. Meet your mountain crew, finalize food supplies, and proceed to Naro Moru Park Gate.
After enjoying a picnic lunch, begin your hike through lush montane forest to Met Station (3,000m). The trail is gentle and ideal for acclimatization.

Dinner and overnight at Met Station.
Day 2: Met Station (3,000m) – Mackinder’s Camp (4,300m)
After breakfast, trek through the famous Naro Moru moorlands and the vertical bog section, gradually gaining altitude toward Teleki Valley.
Arrive at Mackinder’s Camp (4,300m) in the early evening with spectacular views of the surrounding peaks and alpine vegetation.

Picnic lunch en route. Dinner and overnight at Mackinder’s Camp.
Day 3: Mackinder’s Camp – Point Lenana (4,985m) – Chogoria Campsite
Depart at 2:30 AM for your summit attempt. Ascend steep scree slopes via Austrian Hut (4,700m), passing near the Lewis Glacier before reaching Point Lenana (4,985m) around sunrise.
Enjoy panoramic sunrise views across Kenya — on clear days you may even see Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance.
After sunrise, descend to Mintos Hut for a full breakfast. Later, continue down the spectacular Gorges Valley along the Chogoria Route, one of the most scenic areas on Mount Kenya.
Dinner and overnight at Chogoria Campsite.
- Hiking Time: 10–12 hours
Day 4: Chogoria – Nairobi
After breakfast, begin your descent toward Chogoria (approximately 32km). 4WD vehicles are provided; however, in poor weather conditions, climbers may need to walk part of the distance if vehicles cannot access the Bandas.
From Chogoria, transfer back to Nairobi, arriving in the late afternoon.
