The Sirimon Route is one of the most scenic and gradual approaches to Mount Kenya, offering breathtaking landscapes, diverse vegetation zones, and spectacular views of the main peaks.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Sirimon Gate (2,650m) – Old Moses Camp (3,300m)
- Elevation Gain: 650m
- Distance: 9km
- Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Upon arrival at Sirimon Gate, you will complete park formalities and enjoy a picnic lunch. The trek begins through magnificent montane forest, bamboo, and giant heather zones before opening into high-altitude moorland.
This is a gentle acclimatization hike with beautiful scenery and opportunities to spot wildlife.
Dinner and overnight at a private campsite near Old Moses Camp.
Day 2: Old Moses Camp (3,300m) – Shipton Camp (4,200m)
- Elevation Gain: 900m
- Distance: 16km
- Hiking Time: 7–8 hours
After breakfast, follow the trail uphill, branching right at the junction. The route crosses Ontulili River before contouring through moorland and crossing Liki North River.
You then ascend into the dramatic Mackinder’s Valley with panoramic views leading to Shipton Camp. The camp sits below the towering peaks and glaciers of Mount Kenya and is home to rock hyrax and sunbirds.

Day 3: Shipton Camp (4,200m) – Point Lenana (4,985m) – Old Moses Camp (3,300m)
- Elevation Gain: 785m (to summit)
- Distance: 25km
- Hiking Time: 10 hours
An early start at 3:00 AM for the summit attempt. The climb to Point Lenana takes approximately 3–4 hours. The trail ascends frozen scree and rocky terrain with minor scrambling.
At sunrise, enjoy unforgettable views across Kenya — and on clear mornings, even Mount Kilimanjaro is visible on the horizon.
After celebrating at the summit, descend back to Shipton Camp for breakfast, then continue down through Mackinder’s Valley to Old Moses Camp. The descent is scenic and gradual, allowing time to appreciate the unique alpine vegetation and landscapes.

Day 4: Old Moses Camp – Sirimon Gate
- Elevation Descent: 650m
- Distance: 9km
- Hiking Time: 2–3 hours
After breakfast, enjoy a relaxed descent through the forest zone back to Sirimon Gate, where your transfer vehicle will be waiting to take you to your next destination.
